US postal workers outraged after poverty contract announced for city letter carriers

"After nearly two years of talks, the union for city letter carriers announced a poverty-level tentative agreement ...According to a summary by National Association of Letter Carriers, the 42-month deal (2023 through 2026) contains pathetic 1.3 percent annual wage increases...After record-high inflation and other recent agreements for autoworkers, UPS and east coast dockworkers which all contained modest wage increases between 20 and 61 percent. Third postal contract expires with no deal reached as APWU bureaucracy prepares sellout

"...The American Postal Workers Union covers over 200,000 postal workers across four main crafts: Clerks, Maintenance, Motor Vehicle Services, and Support Services.

Patriots Built America | A revolutionary choice, Benjamin Franklin began his tenure as postmaster general

A revolutionary choice | Benjamin Franklin began his tenure as postmaster general on July 26, 1775

"...it was yet another thumb in the eye of the British King,” author and scholar Tara Ross wrote in a 2021 blog post.

It was imperative to the revolutionary cause that messages between those fighting for independence from the Crown were not handled by the Crown, so it made sense for the Colonies to create their own system.

Franklin had been both postmaster of Philadelphia and joint postmaster general for the Crown, and his work as a former newspaper printer —printing and postal services worked hand in glove in the 18th century — was also an asset. ..."

USPS shared customer postal addresses with Meta, LinkedIn and Snap

"The postal service took action to ‘remediate’ the issue following a TechCrunch investigation ...On Wednesday, the USPS said it addressed the issue and stopped the practice, claiming that it was “unaware” of it. TechCrunch found USPS was sharing customers’ information by way of hidden data-collecting code (also known as tracking pixels) used across its website. Tech and advertising companies create this kind of code to collect information about the user — such as which pages they visit — every time a webpage containing the code loads in the customer’s browser. In the case of USPS, some of that collected data included the postal addresses of logged-in USPS Informed Delivery customers, who use the service to see photos of their incoming mail before it arrives. ..."

FedEx Express to retire 22 Boeing 757 freighters as downturn continues to bite

"FedEx Express has announced that it has permanently retired another 22 of its Boeing 757-200 freighters as the carrier continues to manage its fleet resources. The company reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenues of $201 million, compared with $430 million during the same period in 2023, resulting in a year-on-year decrease of 53%.  ...Adding to FedEx’s challenges, at the start of 2024, rival company United Parcel Service (UPS) secured the lucrative contract to become the primary air cargo carrier for the US Postal Service (USPS), a contract that FedEx had held for the past two decades. This is thought to be another contributing factor to the retirement of the 757s from the FedEx fleet.  ..."

D-Day's 80th Anniversary Brings World War II Veterans Back to the Beaches of Normandy

Snippet of Article: "...80th anniversary of D-Day.

The Allied invasion, which began on June 6, 1944, led to the defeat of the Nazis and the end of the war. The assault began with Allied aircraft bombing German defenses in Normandy, followed by around 1,200 aircraft that carried airborne troops. As dawn broke, Allied forces started bombing German coastal defenses and shortly after that vessels began putting troops ashore on five codenamed beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. By the end of the day, nearly 160,000 Allied troops had landed in Normandy, although there were thousands of casualties.

Few witnesses to history’s biggest amphibious invasion remain alive today. ..."

PMG DeJoy describes the Postal Service’s upward trajectory as a result of the Delivering for America plan

PMG DeJoy
"...“When I arrived, the trajectory was in plain sight. We were 15 years into a 25-year plan to lose close to $300 billion. And that is what today, we are working very hard to change. We have a plan, it’s called the Delivering for America plan, and we are making great progress on the strategies it identifies,” said DeJoy.

Addressing the historical difficulties encountered by the Postal Service, DeJoy traced these issues back to decisions made by the organization’s legislative and regulatory authorities prior to his tenure.

“In 2006, Congress and the Postal Regulatory Commission legislated, and began regulating, a business model that was dead on arrival. This was immediately proven,” he said. ..."
