3 N.J. men tried to deposit checks they stole from the U.S mail, feds say

"...Three men are facing federal charges in an alleged scheme to steal checks from U.S. mail, alter them and try to deposit them into bank accounts.

Jeffrey Bennett, 31, of Irvington and Rahway; Aquil Hubbard, 31, of Newark and Middlesex; and Tashon Ragan, 26, of Union have been charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. ..."

Brazen high-volume mail theft attacks becoming more common, data shows

"...The Postal Police Officers Association shared data it received through a federal records request with Eyewitness News, and it shows that in the government's 2024 fiscal year, there were 52,000 high-volume mail attacks across the country, which is up from the year before.

In 2010, there were only around 2,000 reported cases. ...Albergo said there are now only about 350 postal police officers guarding USPS facilities, which he doesn't think is enough."

Mail-in election ballots stolen in at least 2 N.J. towns

Former Gettysburg Times publisher pleads guilty to stealing packages, selling them online

"...The former publisher of the Gettysburg Times pleaded guilty to stealing packages from the Gettysburg post office to sell online, according to a news release and court documents. ...Harry Hartman, 54, of Garnet Valley in Delaware County, the Times' former publisher, had been formally charged June 5 with a felony charge of mail theft. ...complaints that packages marked as “delivered” or “out for delivery” had not been received."
