Union Rejects USPS Call For Five-Day Delivery, New Business Model


"...“Postal management has intensified its financial problems by offering excessive worksharing discounts to major mailers and by subcontracting work at exorbitant costs,” Burrus said. Worksharing discounts are given to mailers that pre-sort and pre-barcode their mail, he said, but the discounts exceed the costs the Postal Service avoids when the work is performed by mailers. “Subcontracting is another important source of waste and inefficiency,” he noted.

“We call for a thorough investigation by the Office of the Inspector General into the expanding role of subcontracting and the inflated costs associated with them,” he said.

“Furthermore, we reject any effort to pollute the collective bargaining process with threats of draconian work-rule changes.” Contract negotiations will begin in August. ..."    postal news

Union’s opposition to excessive workshare discounts

A Clear Picture

"... For 1,000 automated letters, which cost the USPS $6.17 to process in delivery sequence, the Postal Service “forgives” $105 in discounts for a portion of the work required to sort the mail into delivery seuqence, resulting in a loss of $98.83 per 1,000 automated letters. That amounts to a loss of $98,830 for every 1 million letters.

I have repeatedly expressed the union’s opposition to excessive workshare discounts that shift the costs of postal services from large mailers to individual users. And I have frequently pointed out that the law governing the USPS stipulates that discounts must not exceed the postal cost avoided.

Despite the outrageous USPS giveaways to major mailers, our critics suggest that the Postal Service’s financial crisis can be addressed by reducing employee wages!!!..."

New Postal Rates Kick In Monday


"...An analysis by the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers (ANM) indicates the overall average increase for nonprofit Standard Parcels to be almost 40 percent, said Executive Director Tony Conway. The increases range within the classes, depending on what point in the mail stream it’s entered. Conway said rates are designed to encourage more work by mailers before they dump mail into the system...."
