On this day in history, July 1, 1847, the US Post Office issues the first stamps

"...The two stamps came in two designs, one for each denomination. The five-cent stamp featured a picture of Benjamin Franklin, while the ten-cent stamp depicted George Washington. ... Prior to the invention of the postage stamp, a person mailing a letter would need to bring each letter to the post office and pay for it in person, said the USPS. Rather than a set price, the postage rate was determined by the length of the letter and how far it was being sent, said USPS. ..."

FedEx Express to retire 22 Boeing 757 freighters as downturn continues to bite

"FedEx Express has announced that it has permanently retired another 22 of its Boeing 757-200 freighters as the carrier continues to manage its fleet resources. The announcement came on June 25, 2024, as the Memphis-based shipping and logistics company revealed its financial results for the quarter ending May 31, 2024. The company reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenues of $201 million, compared with $430 million during the same period in 2023, resulting in a year-on-year decrease of 53%.  ...Adding to FedEx’s challenges, at the start of 2024, rival company United Parcel Service (UPS) secured the lucrative contract to become the primary air cargo carrier for the US Postal Service (USPS), a contract that FedEx had held for the past two decades. This is thought to be another contributing factor to the retirement of the 757s from the FedEx fleet.  ..."

USPS nearly always lets law enforcement spy on Americans' mail without warrant

"...Since 2015, the United States Postal Service has agreed to 97% of requests made to share customer's information with law enforcement. These requests for customer's names and their 'to's and 'from's were issued without warrants and regularly complied with. This practice is surprisingly and disappointingly legal. I wonder if they were allowed to shake the box, too. ..."

APWU President Mark Dimondstein's Opening Remarks for 2024 Contract Negotiations

"...This is the fourth round of bargaining in which I am privileged to be the union’s lead negotiator. Each time I have been reminded that former PMG Donohoe shamefully advocated that young workers don’t deserve traditional defined-benefit retirement plans, job security and stable employment and called on Congress to use the Postal Service as “an incubator” for destroying decent jobs. These harmful views found their way into the December 2018 White House “Postal Task Force” recommendations. And much of this thinking led to the formation of the non-career workforce. ..."

D-Day's 80th Anniversary Brings World War II Veterans Back to the Beaches of Normandy

D-Day's 80th Anniversary Brings World War II Veterans Back to the Beaches of Normandy

Snippet of Article: "...80th anniversary of D-Day.

The Allied invasion, which began on June 6, 1944, led to the defeat of the Nazis and the end of the war. The assault began with Allied aircraft bombing German defenses in Normandy, followed by around 1,200 aircraft that carried airborne troops. As dawn broke, Allied forces started bombing German coastal defenses and shortly after that vessels began putting troops ashore on five codenamed beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. By the end of the day, nearly 160,000 Allied troops had landed in Normandy, although there were thousands of casualties.

Few witnesses to history’s biggest amphibious invasion remain alive today. ..."

PMG DeJoy describes the Postal Service’s upward trajectory as a result of the Delivering for America plan

PMG DeJoy
"...“When I arrived, the trajectory was in plain sight. We were 15 years into a 25-year plan to lose close to $300 billion. And that is what today, we are working very hard to change. We have a plan, it’s called the Delivering for America plan, and we are making great progress on the strategies it identifies,” said DeJoy.

Addressing the historical difficulties encountered by the Postal Service, DeJoy traced these issues back to decisions made by the organization’s legislative and regulatory authorities prior to his tenure.

“In 2006, Congress and the Postal Regulatory Commission legislated, and began regulating, a business model that was dead on arrival. This was immediately proven,” he said. ..."
